Journal Entries

Journals will be collected and read thoroughly after every 10 entries. This is a formative grade, so please make sure all your entries are at least 5 sentences, are making thoughtful connections, and answer the prompts completely. 

 

***PLEASE make sure you are completing journals for the correct class. Read headings carefully. 

 

Honors World Literature & Composition

Journal #1:

Archetype Notes

 

Using your notes, discuss the presence of a symbolic archetype in at least TWO different pieces of literature. What’s their purpose in each text? How dose the symbolism contribute meaning to the text?

Remember, text can be anything from movies, to manga, to video games (anything that can be analyzed for deeper meanings).

When reading a brand-new text, what do you believe are the most important details, aspects, or themes to pay attention to? What importance do you try to gain from reading? How do these connect to your core beliefs and philosophies as an individual?

Define allegory in your own words. Why do you think author’s employ this type of narrative purpose? Then, consider the story “Yertle the Turtle.” What larger idea does this entire story represent? Who/What does Yertle represent? The turtles at the bottom? The moon? The lake?

Why do you think Christ-Figures/ Martyr Archetypes occur in literature? What is their larger purpose for the audience?

Then, come up with your example of this type of character from another text. How do they fit the archetype, and what is their significance in the text?

Remember, texts are ANYTHING that can be read for deeper meaning(s).

Look at your Archetypes sheet, and discuss the prensece of a SYMBOLIC archetype in another text. What does this color, number, shape, or idea add to the meaning of your text? 

 

Journal #10:

Take out your Archetypes Sheet and look under the section about CHARACTER. Then, discuss 1-2-character archetypes from another text. How do your chosen characters fit the description on your notes? What THEME does your character teach us?

 

Journal #11:

What does it mean to be evil? What do you think, specifically, causes a good person to change from good to bad? Make a specific connection to defending your reasoning.
